kernel panic-not syncing VFS:unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1)

When I installed caine 1.5 to a usb stick, I get the following message "kernel panic-not syncing VFS:unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1)" part way through the boot process. I have tried installing to the live usb from two different computers, with the same result on each computer. Anyone got any ideas as to what may be causing this? The live cd itself seems to work fine as far as I can tell. Thanks for the help.
Hmm...guess I could do a md5 checksum next time I'm on the computer that has the .iso, but as the live cd seems to work OK, that is unlikely to be the problem.

Thank you for the reply. I actually used the syslinuxiso method, rather than dd. Quite happy to try the dd method. Will let you know how I go with that. Again, thanks for the reply. I did get caine 1.5 working off an external hard drive, but a usb stick with caine 1.5 on it would still be useful. Thanks again.
